Woman stabbed to death on subway-style train in Charlotte shocks community

In Charlotte, North Carolina, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee named Iryna Zarutska was stabbed to death on a light rail train in what officials are calling a random, unprovoked train attack. The subway stabbing Charlotte sparked national outrage, video evidence, and renewed debates over public safety and the criminal justice system.

What happened that night

On August 22, 2025, Iryna Zarutska boarded the Lynx Blue Line (Charlotte light rail) after work. She fled the war in Ukraine, had several jobs here, and was just trying to get home.

Moments after she took a seat in front of Decarlos Brown Jr., he pulled out a pocketknife and stabbed her three times, including once in the neck. There was no known interaction between them beforehand this was not a dispute.

Aftermath and the suspect

Brown, 34, has a long criminal record and has also been reported to have mental health issues. He was arrested shortly after leaving the train and charged with first-degree murder

Authorities have now added a federal charge for “causing death on a mass transportation system.” That could carry very severe penalties.

Public reaction, legal controversy & safety concerns

Video of the woman stabbed on train was released, showing bystanders reacting moments after the woman gets stabbed on subway-style train. Many feel city transit safety and regulatory oversight failed.

There’s also political backlash. Some lawmakers are demanding the removal of Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes, who had earlier released Brown on a written promise to appear in court instead of holding him in custody. Critics argue that decision was part of how this train attack Charlotte tragedy became possible.

The case is being linked in public discussion with themes like “soft on crime,” mental health system breakdowns, violence in mass transit, and how courts handle prior offenses. Among the keyword terms being used in news and social media: north carolina train attack, ukraine girl stabbed on train, lady stabbed on subway, woman stabbed, iryna stabbed to death, woman gets stabbed on train, charlotte stabbing cnn, train attack charlotte, magistrate judge teresa stokes.

What’s next

Investigations are continuing. Officials are working to understand more about Brown’s mental state, and whether additional charges may be added. Charlotte leaders are under pressure to strengthen safety on the Lynx Blue Line. There are also calls for reform in transit security, bonding policies, and for judges to be more cautious when releasing defendants with serious past histories.

Iryna’s family has decided she will be buried in the U.S., where she had started to build a new life after fleeing war. Her death has left the community shaken, calling for accountability and action so that “woman killed on a train” stories do not happen again
