Caught Stealing: When a Simple Favor Becomes a Criminal Free-for-All
In Caught Stealing, Darren Aronofsky dials down the drama and turns up the dark comedy. Austin Butler plays Hank Thompson—a washed-up 1990s baseball slugger turned bartender in New York City—who agrees to cat-sit for his eccentric punk neighbor. That small favor spirals out of control and drags him deep into a riotous world of gangs and theft.
Butler didn’t just act the part—he physically transformed for it. In six months of intense training, he added roughly 35 pounds, part muscle, part “softness,” and focused on crafting a convincing “baseball butt” to fit into tight retro pants.
Off the clock, that realism paid off—Butler tackled most stunts himself, including a brutal scene where he was nearly head-butted hard enough to fracture a rib.
Set to premiere in U.S. theaters on August 29, the film features a stacked cast—Zoë Kravitz as Hank’s EMT love interest, plus appearances by Regina King, Matt Smith, Bad Bunny, and more
