SNL Exodus: Heidi Gardner and Michael Longfellow Step Away Ahead of Season 51
A major cast shake-up on Saturday Night Live is underway—Heidi Gardner and Michael Longfellow, both beloved SNL cast members, are leaving as the show braces for Season 51.
Heidi Gardner Ends Eight-Season Run
After joining Saturday Night Live in 2017 (Season 43) and becoming a repertory player in 2019, 8Heidi Gardner is departing the iconic sketch show after an eight-year tenure—making her the longest-serving female cast member of Season 50
Gardner won fans with standout roles like the teenage critic Bailey Gismert, the over-the-top Angel on Weekend Update, and a memorable, laugh-breaking “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch with Ryan Gosling
Beyond SNL, she gained momentum with roles in Adam Sandler’s Hustle, Netflix’s You, Girls5eva, and the Apple TV+ hit Shrinkig—clearly expanding her footprint outside of being an SNL cast member
Michael Longfellow Exits After Three Seasons
Michael Longfellow also confirmed he will not return for Season 51, ending his three-season run on SNL. He joined as a featured player in Season 48 (2022), was promoted to repertory in Season 50, and earned a loyal following for his dry, deadpan style—some even compared him to Norm MacDonald
In an emotional Instagram post, Longfellow praised Lorne Michaels, the show’s creator, as well as his SNL cast teammates, calling his time “the best three years of my life so far”
The Exodus Continues
These departures are just part of a broader reshuffling. Devon Walker (three seasons), Emil Wakim (one season), and writers Celeste Yim and Rosebud Baker are also leaving before Season 51 hits screens on October 4, 2025.
This wave of exits follows Lorne Michaels’ comments that he felt “the pressure to reinvent” the show after its 50th-anniversary milestone.
Why It Matters
SNL’s identity is shifting—with cherished faces like Gardner and Longfellow leaving, the SNL cast for Season 51 will look very different.
Weekend Update, a flagship segment, could be especially impacted—Longfellow had been seen as a likely anchor, while Gardner added quirky flair to the segment.
This may mark a new era under Lorne Michaels—a deliberate move to refresh the show and bring in new comedic voices.
-Looking Ahead
As Season 51 approaches on October 4, speculation is likely to ramp up: who will step in? Will veteran anchors like Michael Che or Colin Jost stay? Will Bowen Yang continue or make a surprise exit?.
Fans, strap in—SNL’s cast reshuffle** is in full swing, and the only thing certain is that big changes are coming.
